Depression Doesn’t Have to Be Permanent. We Can Help.

Living with Depression
All of us have experienced moments of feeling down, especially while in the middle of grief or a significant life change.
However, for those living with Depression (major depressive disorder), the symptoms are persistent, can be long-term, and often develop for no specific reason. Depression is a mood disorder that can affect anyone, regardless of gender, race, age, or socioeconomic status.
Symptoms of Depression
At least 8.4% of Americans have had one or more major depressive episodes. In reality, the number is probably much higher. Those with Depression may experience sleep issues, the loss of enjoyment of the things they once loved, and difficulty remembering. However, Depression can look different for everyone. It often includes the following symptoms:
- Feeling very sad, hopeless, or worried.
- Not enjoying things that used to bring joy.
- Being easily irritated or frustrated.
- Eating too much or too little, which may result in weight gain or weight loss.
- Trouble sleeping (insomnia) or sleeping too much (hypersomnia).
- Having low energy or fatigue.
- Having a difficult time concentrating, making decisions, or remembering things.
- Experiencing physical issues like headache, stomachache, or sexual dysfunction.
- Having thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
Types of Depression
There are different types of Depression, beyond major depressive disorder, and the symptoms may vary based on the kind. Specific events, body rhythms, or times of the year trigger some types of Depression.
- Seasonal Affective disorder is heightened during winter but wanes during spring and summer.
- Prenatal or postnatal depression affects mothers, especially those who experienced traumatic pregnancies, births, or stressful events leading up to pregnancy.
- Pre-menstrual dysphoric depression happens to women during certain times of their menstrual cycles. The symptoms usually begin to diminish after their periods.
